PRESS RELEASE
June 6 / 07

The Cameco Canada Remembers Int. Air Show regretfully wishes to advise all patrons, sponsors, suppliers and media partners that next year’s “2008 Tribute to Veterans” attraction will not take place due to scheduled runway construction at Saskatoon’s John G. Diefenbaker Airport, … however … this summer’s 2007 Tribute to Veterans is set for Aug. 18th & 19th !!

2007’s Air Show will be the 13th annual and the last opportunity for the community to experience the thrills and excitement of this internationally acclaimed project until its return during the summer of 2009; further details and highlights of this summer’s 2007 Veteran’s Tribute will be released approx. June 30th .

Project Background:

In 1994 over 100 World War Two, Korea War and Peacekeeping Veterans joined other dedicated community volunteers to form Saskatoon’s Canada Remembers Committee, led by (now deceased) Chair and WWII Veteran Jack Scarfe; the first commemorative Canada Remembers Air Show was held on Sunday, May 7th, 1995, as a salute to the 50th Anniversary of the end of WWII … 50 years from the date Nazi Germany announced their surrender.

The Canada Remembers Air Show has long been acknowledged as Canada’s largest Tribute to Veterans project, honouring the presence of thousands of prairie-region Veterans and their families, along with many more coming from across Canada and the United States; to date, the event has entertained and educated over 350,000 on-site patrons, helped raise over $400,000.00 for charitable and community groups and has generated over $24M in economic benefits throughout the province.

Notable Highlights:
In 2002, the Canada Remembers Air Show hosted the only gathering of all four families of our nation’s first casualties of war since the Korea War; parents from Ontario and Nova Scotia have returned to Saskatoon each year since in honour of their sons and all Armed Forces personnel; special additional tributes have also been implemented over the years, such as the 2006 ceremony to honour fallen RCMP members Cst. Robin Cameron & Cst. Marc Bourdages, further demonstrating the project’s commitment of “Remembrance” to all who serve this nation and its communities.

The event has proudly been the recipient of several regional and national awards; two Canada Remembers film documentaries have enjoyed nation-wide television airplay over the last six years on National and Regional Television Networks, with a third documentary being released this fall (produced by Thomega Ent.).

It should be noted that copies of these films are also being utilized by Canada’s school system, coast to coast, as a modern-day tool to help educate our nation’s youth about Canada’s Veterans and the need to “Remember” their sacrifices.

Through the years, unique and rarely seen historical aircraft have participated in the event, such as the famed B-17 “Memphis Belle” (also accompanied by the original pilot, U.S. WWII Veteran Col. Bob Morgan / now deceased),  B-25 Mitchell Bombers, P-51 Mustangs, A-26 Invader, German Henkle HE-111 and others; modern aviation technology such as the C-5 Galaxy (world’s second largest transport aircraft), the C-17 Globemaster and current aviation marvels like the $2Billion Dollar B-2 Spirit, have also attended this tribute event.

The Cameco Canada Remembers Int. Air Show sincerely appreciates the support of the media, it’s committed sponsors and dedicated patrons who have taken the time to personally attend and publicly salute our aging war heroes … unfortunately many Veterans from the original Canada Remembers Committee … and many more of their comrades, are no longer with us to enjoy the pride, respect and appreciation bestowed upon them at this internationally recognized event.

Lest We Forget.
